Sharks are incredible animals that are also one of the most feared animals in the world and considering that there have only been around 152 recorded fatalities ever, it must have something to do with the media hype surrounding the dangers of shark attacks, movies such as Jaws probably do not help the sharks publicity.
The chances of being attacked by a shark are as low as 1 in 11.5 million and even if you were to be attacked, the chances of a fatality are extremely low. The fact is, you are more likely to die from a mosquito bite which is responsible for over 650,000 deaths a year from the spreading of malaria or you could be one of the unlucky ones who gets tangled up with a jelly fish that kills over 40 people per year or you could be really unlucky and get kicked in the head by a cow, responsible for 22 deaths per year! Either way, the mosquito, hippos, bees, dogs, cows, horses, snakes, spiders and even ants kill more people per year than sharks.
There are only three species of shark that have been known to kill humans and they are The Great White, The Tiger Shark and The Bull Shark. However, this information does not include missing people out at sea who could have been attacked and eaten by, for example, a group of Hammerhead sharks. There are over 440 known species of sharks so the chances are the three sharks known to do the killing could be joined by hundreds of others!
Here are pictures of 30 different species of sharks..
Great White Shark
White Tip Reef Shark
Shortfin Mako Shark
We hope you enjoy these wonderful pictures of different species of shark. What is your most favorite? Would you swim with any of them? Are you still scared of sharks or does knowing that you are more likely to be killed by a cow make them less scary?!
